Cynics, Myself Included

Hany Shams, cartoonist for Akhbar Al-Youm, posted the cover of his forthcoming book on satire and caricature in Egypt, which will be released at the Cairo Book Fair in 2014. We could translate the title as “Cynics” or “Satirists” or “Mockers”—indeed caricaturists do all of these things!

I interviewed Hany a few weeks ago. Sitting in his wood-paneled office on the top floor of Akhbar Al-Youm, just down the hall from the managing editor and publisher, he reflected on twenty years of drawing for the Egyptian press. Classic illustrations by Salah Jahin, Baghat Osman, and George Bahgoury covered the walls.

Hany told me that the January 25, 2011, uprising was “half-revolution, half-coup,” while the July 2013 ouster of Morsi served as a corrective.

I’ll save the rest for a long-form essay I’m drafting. In the meantime, more of Hany’s illustrations here and on his Facebook page.
